The project site on Heybeliada is distinguished by its preserved registered timber buildings, sloping topography, and rich vegetation. The existing street pattern, façade character and materials, relationship with the surrounding landscape, prevailing wind direction, daylight orientation, topographic slope, and stepped street network were carefully analyzed and informed the design approach.
Located at the edge of the protected forest and offering a quieter atmosphere than the island center, the site is envisioned as a childcare center where children can experience a calm environment closely connected to nature and the island. In harmony with Heybeliada's existing architectural character, the proposal introduces a timber-clad building that follows the natural topography while establishing a strong relationship with both the street and the adjacent staircase. The ground floor accommodates two classrooms with direct access to the garden, together with the administrative office. Technical spaces are located on the basement level, while the first floor contains the teachers' room and a meeting room.
Integration with the Street Fabric
Situated on the corner plot at the intersection of Demirtaş Street and Onbaşı Street, the building is accessed both from the stepped Onbaşı Street and through a landscaped entrance at the level of Demirtaş Street. Existing trees along the Demirtaş Street parcel boundary are preserved, allowing children to approach the childcare center via a landscaped staircase winding through the trees. A carefully controlled relationship is established between the street network and the existing tree line, reinforcing the island's green character both at the entrance and within the children's outdoor play garden.
